COUNTRY PRESENTATION
Italy, country in the middle of southern Europe, on a peninsula jutting deep into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy includes some of the most varied and scenic landscapes on earth and is often described as a boot-shaped country. The capital of Italy is Rome. Apart from Rome, Milan, Venice and Florence are the top destinations for tourism in Italy. Other major tourist locations include Turin, Naples, Padua, Bologna, Perugia, Genoa, Sicily, Sardinia, Salento and Cinque Terre. Two factors in each of these locations are history and geography.
The Roman Empire, Middle Ages, and renaissance have left many cultural artifacts for the Italian tourist industry to use. Many northern cities are also able to use the Alps as an attraction for winter sports, while coastal southern cities have the Mediterranean Sea to draw tourists looking for sun.
People mainly come to Italy for its rich art, cuisine, history, fashion and culture, its beautiful coastline and beaches, its mountains, and priceless ancient monuments, especially those from the Greek civilization and Roman civilization.
Over a period of more than 3,000 years, Italian history has been marked by periods of temporary unification and long separation, of struggles between communities and failed empires. Now that peace has prevailed for more than half a century, the people of Italy enjoy a high standard of living and a highly developed culture.
Tourism in Italy is one of the economic sectors of the country. With 65 million tourists per year (2019) according to ISTAT, Italy is the fifth most visited country in international tourism arrivals. According to 2018 estimates by the Bank of Italy.
Italy is truly one of the most diverse in the world, and in any region, city, or village you visit, you will find different specialties. Italian cuisine, contrary to popular belief, is not just based on pasta and tomato. In some parts of Northern Italy, pasta is rarely eaten. Rice, potatoes, lentils, soups and similar meals are very common in some parts of the country. Like the language and culture, food in Italy differs region by region. We cannot ignore Italian wine which is exported all over the World. Names such as Barolo, Brunello and Chianti are very well-known.
